London Speak Trip Q&A

for Parent/Guardian

Why are you planning to take the young people away?

The Speak project is for young people to think through, meet, question, critique and help to improve the organisations and services that affect their lives.

The London trip, as part of the Speak project, will be a time to help us as a group look at how our country is governed and how this affects our lives. It will also be a time for the young people to enjoy there capital.

What leaders will there be?

Emma Henderson Rebecca Owen (Bex) Paul Tilley

All three youth workers are trainee professional youth and community workers and CRB checked.

Where will you be staying?

B&B at:

YHA HOLLAND PARK, King George VI Memorial Hostel, HOLLAND WALK, KENSINGTON, LONDON. W8 7QU, Tel: 0207 937 0748, Email hollandparkgroups@yha.org.uk, Website www.yhalondon.org.uk

What about safety?

In case of emergencies we are encouraging young people to carry a spear £10. The young people will all be given a card with the address of YHA Holland Park. If needed a young person can get a taxi, give the card to the driver and get back to the accommodation. This is a safety measure.

We have a risk assessment form for YHA Holland Park and are currently developing a risk assessment form for the whole trip.

Paul Tilley is the first aid appointed person

It is also advised that young people think through safety in carrying money and valuables around London.

What should they pack?

£10 emergency fund (see above)

Towel and toiletries

Clothes!

It is likely that we will be doing lots of walking, so good shoes.

Some spending money, this is the young persons responsibility so it is advised that they think through security in carrying money and valuables.

Snacks

Notebook and pen.

Packed meal for train journey on Friday evening

How will they get there:

We will be going by train from Exeter St David’s to London Paddington.

project update January 2007

On The Edge: project update January 2007

Much has been happening with the churches youth worker project in recent weeks so here is a brief update to keep you informed.

Paul Tilley, our worker, has established contact with two distinct groups of young people. One group have started to meet regularly on a Friday night at Chagford Gospel Church and the young people from that group are currently looking at the feasibility of forming a more formal ‘youth club’. The other group are in Drewsteignton where the work is just beginning to start in earnest. Approximately 20 boys from year six upwards met in the first week in January and Paul and the volunteers from the village will now work with them, and any others that want to come along, to see how they want to carry on. They are meeting on a Saturday night at the Parish Rooms.

Paul is now seeking to build on these encouraging early starts by meeting with other young people that he hasn’t yet had contact with. He will also be seeking to meet with the established youth groups such as the uniformed organisations. Paul is very keen to respond to the young peoples’ needs and wishes and encourages them to think practically as to how these can be achieved. If any teenager (11-18 years old) would like to make contact with him they can through by phoning/texting 07758 880 589 or emailing paulmtilley@gmail.com, Paul is also keen to work within the communities in which the young people live so if anyone would like to speak to him about the project, again please phone or email him.

On The Edge is organised by all of the churches within the Chagford area working together. We are seeking to reach the young people in Chagford, Drewsteignton, Whiddon Down, Gidleigh and Throwleigh parishes. We would love to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in the project. We need: youth work volunteers, fundraisers, sponsors and advocates. If you would like to know more please contact the Chair of the project, Ruth Bint on 01647 433650.

o Chagford Youth Group currently runs every 2nd and 4th Friday evening (7 – 8:30) at the Gospel Chapel
o Drewsteignton currently runs every Saturday evening (6 – 7:30) at the parish rooms

MEDIA RELEASE – For immediate release

Youth Worker launches new project with a whistle-stop tour!

A newly appointed Dartmoor Youth Worker has embarked on his latest job by attending services in all his district’s churches – six in one day!

Paul Tilley, who has recently moved from North Devon with his wife Kate and daughter Eloise after being assigned his new role, undertook the whistle-stop tour to launch On The Edge - a new young peoples’ rural outreach project for Chagford and the surrounding area.

On The Edge has been co-ordinated by all the churches in the area, who are hoping that the project will carry on for at least six years. They have appointed Paul, an experienced Youth Worker, to work with all young people of secondary school age in the area, which covers approximately 25 square miles and includes Drewsteignton, Gidleigh, Throwleigh and Whiddon Down.

The aim of the project is to build bridges between young people and the wider community and to motivate, inspire and enable them to be an integral part of the community.

“The project is a gift to the community from the churches to offer the young people high quality Youth Work that will give them opportunities for safe exploration of the key issues that bother them and help to equip them with the tools needed to handle life,” explains Ruth Bint, Chair of the On the Edge.
“The area is a fabulous place to live and, ultimately, we want the area’s young people to enjoy life where they live now, and to make the most of their surroundings.”
.
Future plans include providing activities and spaces for the area’s young people to explore their creativity; opportunities to form their own type of healthy community; to establish their own friendships and to explore their spirituality, all in a non-threatening and supportive way.
